Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a medical condition in which the force of the blood against the walls of the arteries is consistently too high. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to the rest of the body. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is usually expressed as two numbers: systolic pressure over diastolic pressure.
Systolic pressure: This is the higher number and represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries.
Diastolic pressure: This is the lower number and represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest between beats.
A normal blood pressure reading is typically around 120/80 mmHg.
